Charts and Quotes
It would seem to be a fairly simple task to quote the price of a stock as well as provide it chart. However with so many options on the Internet there are a variety of sites that accomplish this goal in different ways.

¡¡

Yahoo Finance
Yahoo’s quote feature offers both a simplified quote and a detailed one. The simplified version offers the most important information (last trade, volume, % change) while the detailed version is far more extensive providing the bid/ask, day range as well as fundamental data for the company (i.e P/E).

The charting function is very simple with 7 options for the time frame you would like to see charted. Trading volume is provided as is the option to use the moving average or compare the stock versus another company or the S&P 500, Dow or NASDAQ exchange.

Very simple and easy to use, this service is free, detailed and has enough options to satisfy most users.

¡¡

BigCharts.com
Bigcharts offers both a basic quote and a detailed quote. The basic quote is fairly extensive and is only missing the bid/ask quotation (which would make the detailed quote option almost useless for most users). The detailed quote provides interesting information on the firm (what sector it is in, average volume) but nothing beyond the bid/ask quotation is of real importance to the average user.

Charting is where Bigcharts excels. With 16 time periods to choose from, this makes for a more detailed approach for an investor with a specific time frame they wish to see.

The feature which makes Bigcharts amongst the best on the Internet is the ability to customize each chart through a variety of options available.

For a serious investor requiring more specific information that could be found elsewhere, Bigcharts is the site to visit.

CNNfn
CNNfn’s stock quote provides the basic quote for the company you wish to view. This site will provide you with the information you are most likely to need (bid/ask, volume, dividend dates) but will not go any further into the financials of the firm.

¡¡

Quicken
Quicken excels in other areas. Charting, however, is very basic. With 8 time frame options and only the ability to use moving averages and/or compare vs the major indexes, this site is relatively basic in it’s charting.

Given the other options on the Internet, unless basic charting/quotes is needed, these functions are better done elsewhere.

¡¡

WSRN
WSRN’s basic quote is extremely basic with only trading volume, last trade and the 52 week high and low as the information provided. The detailed version is acceptable in what it provides but given the superior nature of Bigcharts.com it’s unlikely that WSRN would be your first choice to provide quote information.

Wall Street Research Net provides a very limited charting experience with only 5 time frames to choose from and none that are likely to be your first choice as a desired time frame. 150 days, 3 year weekly, 10 year monthly as well as 5 and 10 minute intra day charts are unlikely to be the time frames you would most like to see and because there are far better charting options on the Internet, this site can easily be avoided.
